Trends in Kitchen Wall Decoration

The kitchen is a woman's territory, no doubt, but there are some men who can cook too. That said, a woman tends to imbue her personality in her kitchen, modeling it to suit her aesthetic tastes. Some prefer country or feminine themes, while others like to go modern or minimalist. Interior details and trends for the kitchen may have changed as the years pass but the fact remains that women still want their kitchen to reflect themselves.
Women think highly of how people see their kitchens, which sometimes drives women to be meticulous in giving their kitchen a certain feel with the use of appliances paired with themed decorations, kitchen wallpapers, wallpaper borders, and whatnot.
Most women today still go for kitchens that radiate the classic yet cozy country atmosphere. Wallpaper that possesses the warm countryside vibe includes toile wallpaper and borders that display fruit and vegetable patterns. Images like apples in a box or baskets, grapes and berries, and green vines are great options for country wallpaper border. Other great country-inspired wallpaper border designs have images of farm animals, bottles and jars, herbs, teacups, silver and cooking ware, and various fruits and vegetables.
Another wallpaper trend that best fits the kitchen are toile wallpaper designs with Vintage, French, and Victorian themes. Vintage wallpaper borders that show scenes from the olden days provide your kitchen with an antique look and feel. Checkered French wallpaper border with French recipes is also a pleasing choice for kitchen walls.
Modern kitchens meanwhile, require a taste of modernity. No other kitchen wallpaper displays modernity than the Harlequin. Harlequin kitchen wallpapers are the preferred choice by interior designers who remodel contemporary and sophisticated kitchens. It is very easy to manipulate Harlequin wallpapers to suit any theme as they can be custom-made. Brush strokes, medallions, leaves, circles, squares and abstract shapes are also great designs for contemporary, modern wallpaper.
A trend that has made some waves in interior design is faux finishing. While most faux finishes only appear in dens and living rooms, one can employ a faux finishing job on kitchen walls too. Though an actual faux finish painting may look good, kitchen wallpaper with faux finish details is also aesthetically pleasing. In addition, kitchen counters, table tops, cupboards, and other kitchen fixtures can be pasted with a faux finish detail to incorporate a similar theme. Faux designs that can enhance any kitchen are stucco and marbleized finishes.
Kitchen wallpaper is a great and inexpensive alternative to completely remodeling a kitchen. To make kitchen wallpaper and borders create the best of effects, it must go well with the other decorations, fixtures, and lights of the kitchen they are installed in. A harmonious synchrony among these decorative elements can give any kitchen a robust feel and a truly inviting atmosphere.

How I Made a Faux Raised Stone Wall Border or Chair Rail

When redoing my kitchen I wanted to add a chair rail border midway on one wall. I wanted something different, not your usual wood rail. So I looked at the different raised stencils thinking that they might make a nice rail and thought about using flat painted borders but decided that they were not the effect I wanted.
It then came to mind to do something very different.
I created a faux solid stone rough rail 2" wide by a little less than ¼" thick.
I used a water based patching plaster compound (Spackling) to create this effect.
First I measured and marked ½ way down the wall, then measured and marked 2" below that.
For edge guides I used a cut cardboard box for my bottom edge and a yardstick for my upper edge, taping them to the wall as I needed them and removing them and replacing them as I went. This allowed the thickness to be a little less than a ¼". Be sure to remove any spackling build up to the edge guides as you go either with a wet rag or a putty knife.
I used a putty knife to apply the spackling and then wetted the putty knife to swirl the spackling to the "stone" finish that suited me. If it got to dry as I was going I applied a bit of water to the top. You can also use the wet putty knife to define the top and bottom edges the way you want them. I have mine with a rougher uneven edge.
If any spackling gets where you don't want it, use a wet rag to remove it while it is still wet and sanding can remove any that has dried. After applying the spackling I let it dry at least 24 hrs then sand any that might of gotten on the wall where it wasn't wanted.
Before applying the first base coat of paint make sure the spackling is completely dry (at least 24 hrs). I used the same color and type of paint (flat latex in bone white) as was used on the bottom portion of the wall for the first base paint. This covered any smudges of spackling that might of gotten on the bottom wall.
Next I allowed the base coat of paint to dry completely.
Using acrylic craft paint I mixed a color of flat dark sage for the second coat. This accented the colors in the rose floral wallpaper that was to go up and also the new curtains that I'd picked out for the kitchen. I applied this second coat of paint, covering most of the base paint, only allowing small amounts of the base to show through. Then I used metallic acrylic paints in silver and copper and pearlized acrylic paint in white satin, applying them in sweeps and swirls to give the rail more depths and accents.

How to Hang Wallpaper Border Like a Professional

Hanging over a painted surface
If the painted surface is glossy or painted in a flat paint you will need to prime the surface with a wall covering primer. Use a primer that will adhere to glossy surfaces and will also seal a flat surface. Priming is important to ensure proper adhesion and removal of the border when it comes time for removal down the road. If you are hanging the border at the top of the wall at the ceiling line, you will need to measure down from the ceiling ¼" short of the width of the border and draw a line with a pencil parallel with the ceiling at this measurement. You will apply the wall covering primer from the pencil line up to the ceiling. Be sure that you are less than the width of the border on this measurement or you may have primer showing below your border once installed.
Hanging over wallpaper
The best way (and some will argue the only way) to install border over wallpaper is to cut the border into place and inset it into the wallpaper.
Hang your wallpaper as usual, and once you reach the end of the wall you will need to install the border over the wallpaper as you go. Position the border in place, and with a new razor, cut the border into place through the wall covering so that it may be inset into place. Lift up the border and remove the wall covering from underneath and lay the border back down.
If the wallpaper is already dry and installed and you later decide you want to install a border over the wallpaper, you will have to install the border on top of the wallpaper using VOV ( vinyl on vinyl ) glue as opposed to insetting the border as previously described.
Miscellaneous Tips
Start at an inconspicuous place. If hanging the border at the top of the wall at the ceiling line, start in the inside corner above the door that you enter the room. This will be the starting and ending point where you will get a mismatch at the end once you have circled the room. There are techniques for making this mismatch less noticeable which is a topic for another article at another time, but if you put you mismatch in this corner it should not be too noticeable.
Holding the border up. One challenge you will need to overcome is how to hold the border in place at the ceiling as you work your way around the room. The best solution I have come across for this is to hold the border to the wall with a thumb tack, which allows you to come down the ladder to re-position the ladder as you work your way across the wall. The hole left by the thumb tack can be smoothed out with a smoother and shouldn't be noticeable once the border is installed.
Turning the corner. As a rule you will cut your corners as you turn them. The method used by most paper hangers is to turn the corner onto the next wall about ¼" and cut the border there, this creates a ¼" "buffer". Next you overlap the border over this ¼" buffer and realign your border to level as begin down the next wall. I like to dab this overlap with a bit of VOV (vinyl on vinyl) paste to be sure the overlap holds.
Smoothing and cleaning. Smooth down the border with a smoother to remove air bubbles and to lay the border down onto the wall. Keep a small bucket of clean, warm water and using a sponge, wipe down the ceiling, wall below and above the border, and the border itself to keep it clean from paste. Clean everything as you go, don't let the glue dry on anything thinking that you can remove it later- it may not come off later at all or without damage and / or a struggle after it dries.
Change blades often. Probably the number one error that many DIYers make is using a dull razor blade. If the blade snags or tears your paper as you cut, you will not get a clean and neat job - so change blades often

Amazing Jungle Wall Decals

Want to bring the playful warmth of jungle animals to your child's bedroom? In the past, decorating walls this way required sticky, pre-pasted wallpaper that was impossible to remove. But with advances in printing and printable surfaces, jungle wall decals and stickers are available these days that are both removable and repositionable. Every lion, tiger, elephant and monkey can come to life in colorful detail with vinyl jungle wall decals by Wallies, Roommates Peel and Stick, and many other high-end artisans. Great places such as the Wall Sticker Outlet carry these brands and more, and with free shipping too!
Jungle wall decals come in the form of murals, peel and stick appliques, and even single-application transfers. In mural form, a large pre-designed jungle wall scene is pieced together through the application of individual stickers and decals. There may be some flexibility as to how to set the mural up, and this is where creativity comes in. By supplementing your wall mural with a few extra sheets of jungle wall decals, you can add flora, fauna, wild animals, and anything else that sets the jungle mood.
Freedom is your friend here, and the sheer variety of wall stickers and decals allow you to create anything you like on the walls of your child's bedroom. Jungle wall decals also come in different themes, from realistic to cartoonish. With the right ones, you can create the dark heart of Africa... or you can create a lighter, gentler jungle wall scene that would be perfect for a baby's nursery decor. Many playful alphabet letters are draped with jungle animals, and these are great additions to young boys or girls bedrooms as well as playrooms too.
Another option for creating a jungle-themed room is the application of paintable do-it-yourself (or DIY) wall murals. These come as full scene pre-printed designs that are applied to the wall and then traced. The paper is then removed, and painting of the mural begins. The colors are predetermined by the artist's instructions, but part of the fun here can be adding your own creative touch to your jungle wall scene.
With the Dreamworks film Madagascar 2 coming up soon, jungle wall decals will soon be more popular than ever. You can seek out these very colorful characters, or you can create your own scene using some very detailed wall murals and sticker creations you can find online. Jungle wall stickers include the most amazing creatures on the planet - zebras, gorillas, lions, tigers and elephants... the list goes on and on. Hang vines down the walls of your child's bedroom or build a lush canopy of trees near the border of the ceiling.
No matter which safari-type setting you end up with, choose jungle wall decals that will complement your child's existing room or nursery decor. Get your child involved if you can, and use both of your imaginations to design the perfect bedroom. Most of all, have fun!

Hard Economic times brings with it the thought that remodeling your home may be out of reach. Wallpaper Border allows this thought to be something of the past. It not only makes it economically feasible but adds a bit of spice to any existing room.
To transform your existing room from drab to fab all you need to do is put forth a little time and effort.
Walk into any existing room in your home and just use your imagination to explore your possibilities. Using wallpaper border as a design element you do not need to worry about the color of the room or the surrounding theme. Wallpaper border is made with everyone's taste in mind. There is always a style available to meet the unique needs of kids, sports fans, NASCAR fans and so on.
One of my favorite things about wallpaper border is that you usually cannot go wrong. Most of the choices available allow you some room for error. A little sense of style is all that is needed to make that perfect choice. Like the old saying goes, "Where there is a will there is a way." This saying really holds true when remodeling with wallpaper border.
Another option that you have is peel and stick borders. This is not my favorite option but it is available for those that need an easier alternative. Its only advantage is that it allows you to easily change out the border if the need arose.
With all these choices available don't let these hard economic times stop your from adding that perfect touch to your room. In the end it becomes a priceless and inexpensive addition to your home.

Wallpaper Borders - Now the Quickest and Easiest Way to Decorate and Accessorize the Home Decor
By Daniel P Elliott

With the onset of the spring season comes spring cleaning, home repairs, remodels, and a fresh coat of paint. While some of these tasks require a sizable amount of time and cost, there is another way to refresh the home without adding a large expense or mess. Wallpaper and borders have been around for generations.
kids wallpaper borders
It is typical to incorporate ladders, razors, seam rollers, sponges and a whole slew of other tools and gadgets in order to achieve professional results. An extra body has also been an inconvenient requirement. Most of these tools of the trade have not seen any new improvements. The old adage mostly holds true in this situation, "if it's not broken, don't fix it". However, there are a couple of techniques and new technologies which will invariably make quick and clean work of applying wallpaper borders.

kids wallpaper borders
Traditionally, cutting the wallpaper border to a more manageable length has always proven to be challenging to handle. When the individual does cut the border to a shorter length it just means seams are potentially more visible. Using newer technology available on the market today, a wallpaper border application tool actually eliminates the need for getting tangled up in the border while standing precariously on a ladder.

kids wallpaper borders
A wallpaper border tool allows the home owner to apply the border in a few minutes rather than in excess of a half hour. By self dispensing wallpaper border from a roll, the tool conveniently and safely holds the entire border section. When it becomes necessary to relocate the ladder or foot stool, the tool is quickly and easily secured to the wall temporarily giving the home owner added safety by preventing the need to stretch while on the ladder or foot stool. There are several websites that illustrate the use of seam rollers, proper hanging techniques, and the process of hanging wallpaper borders under the search terms of "Wallpaper Border Hanging Tool".

kids wallpaper borders
What once was a two person job or an incredibly frustrating job for one individual, one person can now accent each and every room of the average sized home in short order. Even though the wallpaper border application tool condenses a time consuming and difficult task, ladder safety always needs to be followed. Never stand on the top or highest rung of an A-frame ladder. Following ladder safety will reduce the chances of a serious accident and allow the home owner to enjoy a job well done.

How To Remove Wallpaper Borders
By Brenda Murphy

So you bought a new house. You love everything about it except for the ugly wallpaper borders in almost every room. Time to get them off the wall. Removing wallpaper borders is not an easy task, but with a few good tips and some elbow grease, you can get the job done.

The best way to remove the wallpaper border depends on what type of wallpaper was used, what type of surface it was glued on and what type of adhesive was used. One of the easiest things you can try is to use a hair dryer to heat the wallpaper border which may loosen the adhesive enough to let you peel it off.
Zebra Wallpaper Border
Usually if the border has been glued to wallpaper, it will come off fairly easy. Slightly mist it down and use a plastic scraper to remove it from the wall. If the wallpaper border has a vinyl covering that won’t let the water or any commercial wallpaper remover soak through, use a perforation tool over the entire surface of the border to allow it to soak in.

Zebra Wallpaper Border
If the wallpaper border has been glued directly onto a painted wall, use warm water and some commercially available wallpaper remover and give it plenty of time to soak in before you try to scrap it off.

Zebra Wallpaper Border
Steaming also works well for removing wallpaper borders. Steam the entire surface of the wallpaper border. Start from the bottom to the topmost part in sections. If the adhesive is very strong, steam the boarder twice or more until the wallpaper boarder starts to loosen from the wall. Use a plastic or soft metal scraper to avoid damaging the wall. Scrape the border off the wall working from the bottom up. Use warm water and a clean sponge to remove any remaining adhesive from the wall.

Zebra Wallpaper Borderv
Instead of using a commercially available wallpaper stripper, you can also use a mixture of fabric softener and water. Mix 1 capful of fabric softener with 1 quart of water. Pour it in a spray bottle and spray it right on the wallpaper border. For very strong adhesives, you can also use a sponge and soak the boarder with pure fabric softener.

Zebra Wallpaper Border
Another “homemade” option is vinegar. Mix water and vinegar and pray it on, or use an old paint roller and roll it right on the wallpaper boarder. The stronger the wallpaper adhesive seems to be, the more vinegar you should use. Use the vinegar option as a last resort, since it will smell pretty strongly for a few days. Wipe the walls down with a damp rag after you removed the wallpaper boarder to get as much of the vinegar as possible off your wall

All you have to do is imagine what style of wallpaper border will make the room come alive and chances are that you will be able to complete the job in a matter of minutes.

Let's start with your living room. It doesn't matter what co

Light up a few candles, pour yourself a glass of your favorite wine and sit back and relax in a nice warm bathtub. This is living.

Kitchen Wallpaper Border
Next we will take a look at your kitchen walls. Here you will want to bring out the fact that food and beverages are prepared in this room. With food and beverage being served in this room on a daily basis, you might want to go with wallpaper borders showing some sort of fruit or vegetable print on the border.

Kitchen Wallpaper Border
You also have many more choices for wallpaper borders in your kitchen such as flowers and fine China borders, the baker and his pies border, classic cocktail recipes border, wine bottles with grapes in the foreground border or perhaps surround your entire kitchen with a lush grape vine at the top edge of your kitchen walls. Wallpaper Guide for Your New Baby
By Chris Robertson

Disney Babies, Elmo and friends, little ducklings, Beatrix Potter, Noah's Ark, Candyland jungles, sailboats and stars and moons and teddy bears and choo-choo trains - and those are just a few of the thousands of wallpaper patterns that are available for the single most precious room in your house. Decorating a nursery for your soon-to-be bundle of joy is a joyful task, but the choices can be overwhelming. If you're choosing wallpaper for your nursery, there are some guidelines and advice that will help you choose nursery wallpaper that he'll love just as much when he's five as you do on the day you bring him home from the hospital.

Decide on a motif.

Baby Wallpaper Border
If you've already chosen some of the furnishings or bedding for your baby's room, you may have a pretty good idea of the sort of nursery you want to create. Whether you opt for Disney characters, sailboats and fishes, fantasy castles or frolicking lambs, you'll find nursery wallpaper that supports the theme. Keep in mind though that your child is going to grow faster than you can imagine, and it won't be long before she's got some very definite tastes of her own. By all means, indulge your fantasies if the motif you want is cutesy nursery with fluffy lambs, bunnies and teddy bears - but opt for wallpaper that's easily strippable when she's ready for Barbie and Hello Kitty.

Keep it simple and bright.

Baby Wallpaper Border
Babies distinguish bright colors and simple shapes long before they can discern anything else. Those puffy clouds and smiling stars are there for YOUR benefit, not your baby's. If you're looking for something that will stimulate your new munchkin's brain, pick wallpaper with bright primary colors and simple shapes. One of the neat wallpaper tricks is to opt for a simple striped pattern accented with a strippable wallpaper border in complementary colors. It's a simple matter to replace the ABC nursery blocks wallpaper border with Crayola crayons when he's two, and Elmo and Friends nursery wallpaper border when he's four and bats, balls and gloves when he's six.

Make it FUN.
Baby Wallpaper Border
If you do decide to opt for a busy style wallpaper, choose one that will be fun as she grows older. Wallpaper murals can become a 'toy' of sorts, a background to imagination as your child grows older and starts to notice the world around her. Try three 'simple' walls with a repeating pattern, and wallpaper the fourth wall with a jungle nursery wall mural, or - if you can find one - Where's Waldo?

Pick wallpaper that's easy to clean.

Baby Wallpaper Border
Trust me on this one. Your adorable cooing bundle will grow into a curious toddler who'll finger paint on the walls with Mommy's lipsticks and practice her letters on the ABC blocks. Whatever pattern or style of nursery wallpaper you choose, make certain that it's washable!

Removing Wallpaper Borders
By Peter Emerson

KidsWallpaper Border
The method of Wallpaper border removal depends on what the Border was applied on, like painted wall or not, was it applied over wallpaper, and what was used to hang the wallpaper border. If it's on wallpaper, it can be easily peeled off. However, if it's on a painted wall, dampening the lower layer with warm water, and letting it soak for a while considerably make the job easier.

KidsWallpaper Border
You can use any commercial chemical wallpaper remover if the border is a genuine Wallpaper border and is reasonably new. The remover will reactivate the adhesive and let you scrape off the paper with a scraping tool. However the chemical usually won't permeate if the wallpaper border has a vinyl outer covering. Use a perforation tool to break the surface so the moisture can reach the adhesive.

KidsWallpaper Border
Peel the wallpaper border with soft metal or plastic scraper, and not tools like strong metal scrapers or filling knives, which may result in unwanted scratches on the wall. If the Wallpaper border material is fibrous, like paper, you can use a garden sprayer to drench it with the chemical remover, and then remove the remaining residue. Use a wallpaper steamer to reactivate the paste. You can then easily scrape of the paper.

KidsWallpaper Border
You can also use steam removal method for Wallpaper borders. First, steam the surface of the wall. Start from the bottom to the topmost part, one section at a time. If the wallpaper border uses extremely strong adhesive, you may need to steam each strip twice or thrice before removing. Use a broad knife to scrape a strip of wallpaper off the wall, working from the bottom up. And while the adhesive is still warm, scrape each strip of paper. Using warm water and sponge, remove remaining adhesive residue.
